News:
Alexander Dimitrenko and "Fast" Eddie Chambers will meet in Germany on July 4th in Hamburg, Germany. 26-year-old approx 255-pound Dimitrenko will almost certainly start favourite. Boxing at home, "Sascha" will also have a big size and weight advantage over the once-beaten Chambers, and he is also the bigger puncher of the two. Also, the last time 27-year-old Chambers fought in Germany, against the highly rated Alexander Povetkin, he lost. Will bad memories of the country serve to haunt the 34-1(18) Philly fighter in July?
We all know how hugely talented Chambers is. His speed of hand is really something to see and he clearly holds an edge over Dimitrenko in this department. But, as we also know, the knock on "Fast" Eddie is his desire to really work to the fullness of his ability, both in the gym and in the ring. The smart boxing skills of Chambers were seeing to it that he was handily out-pointing Povetkin back in January of 2008 - for four rounds, anyway. Then, inexplicably (Chambers says it was due to his becoming overconfident in the bout), Chambers took his foot off the gas and gave round after round away and lost a wide decision. The concern fans and experts will have until he beats a guy like Dimitrenko or a reigning world champion, is that Eddie will do this again some day. Will it happen on July 4th?
Dimitrenko can bang, he is solid as can be and he is hungry. At 29-0(19), the man who has wins over the likes of Luan Krasniqi, Timo Hoffman and Vaughn Bean to his credit, will pretty much dwarf the 6'1" Chambers when they meet face to face. Indeed, apart from his speed and slickness, Chambers will have no obvious advantages over the big man from Ukraine. And slickness and speed can only get a fighter so far, no matter how cute and gifted he is.
There is a chance Chambers - who said to another boxing site after his win over Sam Peter that he will surprise us with his weight and physical appearance the next time he fights - will be able to box rings around Dimitrenko and make him look somewhat silly at times. But Chambers must keep this up for the full 12 rounds if he's to get a win. A KO stoppage for the man from Philly looks out of the question but, tough as it will no doubt be, a points win is not an impossibility.
There are a number of questions surrounding this fight, and it is a genuinely intriguing match-up that we all hope happens. Will Chambers be able to get inside or handle Dimitrenko's huge advantage in reach some other way? Will Dimitrenko struggle to pin down the faster man? Will Chambers suffer flashbacks from the Povetkin loss?
In facing each other, the two top contenders will be fighting for a shot at the WBO heavyweight champion of the world - currently Wladimir Klitschko. As such the stakes could not be much higher. This should bring out the best in both men. Without being at all disrespectful to the hard working and determined Dimitrenko, I see this meeting as a fight that Chambers can win - if he's 100-percent focused and ready to push through mental and physical barriers. A pure boxer with enviable skills, the one thing - and it's a big thing - that can send Chambers home with a second loss is his failure to keep fighting and instead fade across the second half of the bout. This could happen for a second time, but Chambers deserves this chance to prove it will not.
A KO win looks all but impossible for Chambers, but the man who stopped the extremely durable Timo Hoffman does have a chance to end things early; although as defensive-minded as chambers is, this too looks unlikely.
A distance fight in all probability then, my pick is Chambers by a split decision.

News:
International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (30-0, 24 KO’s) had a tougher than expected time against number #11 rated IBF contender Mahir Oral (25-2, 10 KO’s) on Saturday night, stopping him in the 10th round at the Max Schmeling Halle, in Berlin, Germany. Abraham, 29, used a very economical approach to the fight giving away many of the rounds to the much busier Oral and making the fight tougher than it might have been had Abraham fought all out in one of the earlier rounds.
Oral, 29, was knocked down five times in total, including three times in the 10th when he took a knee several times to escape punishment. Ultimately, Oral’s corner threw in the towel after the third knockdown in the 10th, as it was clear that Oral was a beaten fighter and couldn’t continue on.
Oral controlled the action in the first three rounds, throwing short combinations and nice jabs and easily outworking Abraham. Oral stood straight up and showed very little power in his shots. However, he didn’t need to because he was much busier Abraham and was able to catch Abraham when he would attempt to throw punches. During this part of the fight, Abraham looked slow and sluggish compared to his best years at middleweight two years ago.
In the 4th round, Oral continued to dominate the action with his short combinations and better work rate until near the end of the round when Abraham suddenly dropped to the canvas after getting hit with a series of hard hooks from Abraham. Had Oral been aware of Abraham’s tendency to try and steal the rounds by throwing a flurry in the last thirty seconds of every round, Oral might have been able to avoid getting hurt. However, he stood directly in front of Abraham and made it easy for him. Abraham then teed off on the hurt Oral in the remaining seconds of the round, hitting him with some monstrous shots as the round came to a close.
Abraham looked like the fighter of old in the 5th round, fighting hard the entire round and landing a huge number of power shots. Oral slipped to the canvas early in the round after getting hit by a right hand. However, the referee ruled that it was caused by a slip and not a knockdown. The crowd thought otherwise, as did I. Oral seemed to have problems taking hard shots from Abraham.
In the 6th round, Abraham flattened Oral again, this time knocking him down with a big right hand to the head. Oral got back up and gamely tried to fight back but took an enormous amount of punishment in the remainder of the round.
Abraham appeared to take the round off in the 7th, throwing few punches and letting Oral land his quick combinations and jabs. Oral, when he’s allowed to throw his shots, he looks quite good for a fighter ranked number #11. He showed some good technical ability.
Unfortunately, his power was almost nonexistent. In the latter part of the round, Abraham came on and landed some hard shots. However, I had Oral winning the round based on his better work in the first two minutes of the round. In the 8th and 9th rounds, Abraham got the better of Oral with his big power shots. He kept a lot of pressure on Oral and fired back counter shots in retaliation when hit by Oral’s weak combinations.
In the 10th round, Oral looked beaten and ready to go at the start of the round. His body language seemed to indicate a fighter that had taken too many blows and was looking for a way out. Early in the round after getting hit with several left hands from Abraham, Oral dropped down and took a knee on the canvas.
Moments later, Oral took another knee after getting hit with several shots from Abraham. The punches looked nothing special, but Oral just seemed to be finished mentally and appeared to be at the end of his rope. His corner should have stepped in and stopped the fight at this point because he had nothing left.
Abraham then finished matters by hitting Oral with a three shot combination that sent Oral down for the third and final time in the round. Oral’s corner then threw in the towel and the fight was mercifully stopped at 1:23 of the 10th by referee Earl Brown.
---------------
In other action on the card, unbeaten cruiserweight prospect Alexander Frenkel (18-0, 14 KO’s) defeated Rodolfo De Dominicis (15-2, 11 KO’s) by a 3rd round stoppage in a fight that was very sloppy and hard to watch. Dominicis, 36, appeared to be a step backwards for Frenkel in terms of quality, and made the fight a nightmare to watch because of his wild charging attacks. Dominicis was knocked down twice in the 2nd round, although the referee appeared to blow the call on the first knockdown because Dominicis fell down without getting hit.
The second knockdown came from a right hand to the back of Dominicis’ head. In the 3rd round, Frenkel opened up with a sustained power attack in which he hammered Dominicis with a number of tremendous uppercuts that caused the referee to step in and halt the fight as Dominicis’ corner decided to throw in the towel.
It was a hard fight for Frenkel to look good against because of Dominicis’ unorthodox style of fighting. For a fighter with a 15-1 record going into Saturday night’s fight, Dominicis looked very average. He did, however, serve the purpose of getting Frenkel ready for opponents that will try and rush him later in his career, but that’s about the extent of it. Frenkel would have been better served had he been put in with someone with a lot better skills than a fighter like Dominicis.

News:
Vicious Victor looked like he was going to live up to his moniker when he ignited the Staples Center crowd in LA with a quick first round knockdown of Marcos Rene Maidana. It was Maidana who came out firing bombs, but Ortiz remained poised and landed a beautiful short right hook to score the first knockdown.
The counter right hook was available because Maidana came out fast, throwing long powerful right hands from the outset, leaving no doubt as to what his game plan might be. He hadn't scored 24 KOs in 25 victories by accident, and instead of backing off after the knock down, he quickly shook off the effects and resumed his attack.
There was no shying away from throwing the right hand either for Maidana. He continued to wing it with speed and power. The crowd hardly had time to stop gushing over Victor's beautiful right hook, and bam down went Ortiz from a long straight right hand. Ortiz seemed more hurt from his knockdown, than did Maidana. However, his fighting heart pulled him up, and he weathered the storm to finish the rest of the round,
In the second round, Maidana continued to throw hard punches from both sides, but mainly was concentrating on the right, which is not surprising when most experts feel that is the punch an orthodox fighter should use against a southpaw. Land it he did, but not without consequences, as he was dropped twice more in the second round. Both times he got dropped from the counter right hook.
Certainly now Maidana would stop throwing that shot with such abandon? Nope, he shrugged off any risk of receiving more hooks, and continued to throw and score with the right hand. Punches from both fighters were flying at blinding speed from all angles, and with knockout power behind most.
It did appear that Victor Ortiz was a little sharper, and had a little tighter defense, but he still would occasionally get hit with straight and looping right hands. At the same time, he was landing some crisp counters of his own. Each man was demonstrating courageous abilities that compelled them to immediately snap back with their own attack once they were tagged.
Fans definitely were given the impression the fight might end at any second. That's how exciting the action remained throughout. There was no time for either man to catch his breath, and it's doubtful fans had the urge to get up to go to the concession stand.
Oscar De La Hoya could be seen at ringside yelling to Victor to fight smart, but Maidana had other ideas. His plan was to keep up the pressure and take advantage of any mistakes Ortiz might make.
Maidana's big chance came In the fifth round when Ortiz was aggressively trying to back him up. That left an opening for one of Maidana's big shots, which in this case was a big looping left hook. The punch crashed against the right eyebrow area of Ortiz' face and ripped open a sizable cut. Before the round was over, Maidana scored with another huge punch, a right hand to the head. Now, the area right below Ortiz' left eye started to rapidly swell. He was in bad shape.
The end came quickly in the sixth, when Maidana continued his attack. He landed both to the head and body. The final punch of the fight was a left hook to the body of Ortiz. Victor got up, but his right eye cut had gotten worse, and his left eye was closing from the left hook landed in the previous round. The referee walked Ortiz over to the neutral corner where the ringside physician could look at the cut. The ref could be heard saying to the doctor that the cut was bad, and "Let's stop it."
Victor was not objecting to the stoppage, and in post fight comments, Max Kellerman seemed to think that failure to object was evidence of some kind of exposed weakness on the part of Victor. Max especially felt that way when Victor commented that he didn't deserve a beating like he got. Max interpreted that to mean he didn't want to go out on his shield like a true champion, and that maybe Victor wasn't “too good to be true” as many thought before the start of this fight.
Or, it might mean that a young fighter got a little too excited in pursuit of a knockout, and got careless. The truth is Victor might have just expressed himself poorly when instead he meant that he shouldn't have gotten beat up the way he did, because he didn't fight a smart fight. He didn't make excuses and say the loss wasn't his fault. He didn't try to shift the blame to his trainers, or to anyone else. He said he was prepared and had a good game plan, but he just didn't carry it out.
Victor also admitted that he was really shook up after the second round knockdown, so much so that he didn't sense in the second round whether Maidana was seriously hurt or not. That makes it even more amazing that even when seriously hurt as he was that he was still able to drop Maidana twice in the round. That is a rare ability only champions or potential champions possess.
It's a safe bet most fans enjoyed this fight, and will still be big fans of Victor Ortiz, and will continue to believe in him and his potential to become a champion. He is very young and made some mistakes in this fight against an experienced veteran, who packs a wallop, and is very dangerous. Realistically, Victor can step back and review the film of this fight, and realize he fought a great fight, but got a little careless which cost him dearly. Can he avoid making the same mistake or mistakes in the future? Of course he can, and odds are that he will come back an even better fighter. Let's hope so, because he sure is fun to watch. Another sure thing about tonight's action……….Marcos Rene Maidana has made a lot of new fans. He is a helluva fighter and fun to watch.
Showtime featured Arthur Abraham, and he had a relatively easy time of it against. Mahir Oral, who showed lots of courage, but just didn't have the fire power necessary to be a serious threat to King Arthur. The fight was stopped at 1:23 of the 10th, but realistically the King could have stopped him much earlier. Every time he opened up, he would immediately have Oral in trouble. Abraham says he wants big fights, and realizes he needs to come to the USA to get them. He says he is ready and willing to do so. He feels confident he can continue to fight at middleweight, or move up to super if that's where the big fight might be.

Long regarded as one of boxing's most underrated champions, WBA featherweight champion Chris John showed the world just what he can do on the sport's biggest stage when he battled Rocky Juarez over 12 exciting rounds in his United States debut on HBO this past February. John, unbeaten at 42-0-2 with 22 KOs, thrilled fight fans with his exciting style, as well as his grace when the 12 round draw verdict was announced. Now preparing for his second stateside appearance against Juarez, which is expected to take place this June 27th in Los Angeles, John is about to receive the promotional push here that he has always deserved, courtesy of Golden Boy Promotions..
Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions, along with company CEO Richard Schaefer and John's agent/advisor Sampson "Picasso" Lewkowicz, today met with Subijaksono Sujono, the Consul General of Indonesia in Los Angeles, to discuss their plans to take John from local hero to international superstar.
Among the topics touched on during meeting were the plan to promote John not just within the boxing world, but also within the large and vibrant Indonesian community of Los Angeles, as well as the overall goal of having John follow in the footsteps of fellow Asian star Manny Pacquiao in terms of crossover international cross-over appeal.
To help with these plans, John is anticipating a six week training camp in Los Angeles to prepare for his next bout. This will give the local media an opportunity to get to know the native of Indonesia better, allow John to get out into the Indonesian community in Los Angeles and to allow him to give new fans a chance to learn his story and about his home country.
"Chris John has always been one of boxing's hidden gems, but now is the time to let him shine," said De La Hoya. "His fight against Rocky Juarez was one of the best of the year so far, and his humble nature reminds me not only of Manny Pacquiao, but of fighters like Alexis Arguello, who are fierce combatants in the ring, but gentlemen outside of it. We're excited to join up with the Indonesian Consul General here in Los Angeles to let the world know about this undefeated superstar."

News:
Returning to the ring for the first time since he was sensationally stopped in the 9th round by the previously little-known Ola Afolabi, Enzo Maccarinelli faces unbeaten Russian cruiserweight Denis Lebedov on June 27th. 28-year-old Maccarinelli, the former WBO 200-pound champion, has to win this one or his career will almost certainly be over.
Now 29-3(22), Enzo will meet the 17-0(12) 29-year-old on the big Frank Warren promoted show at London's O2 Arena topped by Amir Khan's challenge of WBA light-welterweight champ Andriy Kotelnik. so, can the big punching yet vulnerable Welshman do a job on southpaw Lebedev - who, like Afolabi before him, enters the fight with not too much known about him - or will the Warren promoted Russian bring down the curtain on Enzo's career?
The first big change Maccarinelli made after being flattened in March by the man known as "Kryptonite" was to leave long-time trainer Enzo Calzaghe. With no hard feelings between the two men, Maccarinelli will now be trained by Karl Ince. The former WBO boss has made it clear he has got his hunger back under his new coach and that it just wasn't him in the ring with Afolabi that fateful March evening.
Speaking with Gareth A Davies of The Telegraph, Macca said he is looking to score a KO against Lebedev in June.
"I was gutted when I lost [to Afolabi], but anyone who has followed my career knows that wasn't the real me in there," Maccarinelli said. "I've been a world champion once before and I want to become a world champion again. Working with Karl Ince has been fantastic and I've got my hunger back. Things weren't going well in the gym before the Afolabi fight, but this time around there will be no mistakes.
"I'm going to knock out Lebedev and then I'm going after Afolabi for a rematch."
It's hard to find fault with Enzo's continued desire, but we have heard him predict KO wins before. One thing is for sure; this fight is very much make or break for the former champ.
Looking to make a similar splash to the one Afolabi made at Maccarinelli's expense, Lebedev is not in any way intimidated at the prospect of facing the big puncher in the biggest test of his eight year career (Lebedev had a near four year layoff from Sept. of 2004 to July of 2008).
"I've seen Maccarinelli's fights and he's a good boxer," Lebedev told Davies. "I know he wasn't himself against Afolabi, and I have to prepare for a world class opponent. But I am so confident of winning this fight. Last time out I boxed a very dangerous puncher in Eliseo Castillo and I stopped him in five rounds, I believe that I will do the same against Maccarinelli."
A true crossroads fight in every sense, with both guys predicting a KO victory; June 27th's supporting bout might just be the fight of the night.
As for a prediction: Lebedev has fought and won in the UK before, he is a largely unknown commodity and he is a hungry southpaw also. I see another bad night for Maccarinelli!

“Caesars is very excited to welcome these gladiators and their loyal fans to Atlantic City,” said Harrah's Entertainment Sports & Entertainment Consultant Ken Condon. “We are looking forward to what is sure to be another fabulous night of world championship boxing at Boardwalk Hall with these exciting match-ups."
Lopez (25-0, 23 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, returns to Atlantic City where he captured his world title, dethroning defending champion Daniel Ponce De Leon via a first-round knockout on June 7, 2008, ending De Leon’s three-year title reign, which had included seven successful defenses, five by knockout. Lopez has successfully defended his title three times since, all by knockout with only his most recent, against world champion Gerry Penalosa, going past the first round and stretching his victory by knockout streak to 13. He was named Puerto Rico’s 2008 “Fighter of the Year,” where he went 4-0 (3 KOs), including three first-round knockout world title victories. His professional resume boasts a victory by knockout percentage of 92% which explains why the average length of his fights is under four rounds.
Lontchi (18-0-2, 8 KOs), a native of Cameroon who fights out of Montréal, Québec, Canada, has promised to put up a Canadian cold front that will ice Lopez’s winning streak and title reign. A recent power surge has produced knockout victories in his last two fights, his most recent on April 4 when he successfully defended his NABA title with a seventh-round KO of Cecilio Santos. The former Canadian featherweight champion dropped down to 122-pound division in 2007 where he captured the vacant NABA and NABO titles winning a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over Cruz Carbajal. He has successfully defended the NABA title three times while advancing his world ratings where he had been ranked No. 3 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and is currently No. 7 by the WBO.
Montiel (39-2-1, 29 KOs), from Los Mochis, Mexico, has captured four world titles in three different divisions. He returns to the ring in defense of his WBO bantamweight title, which he won in Tijuana on March 28 on “Latin Fury 8,” by knocking out Diego Silva in the third round. It was Montiel’s fifth consecutive world title knockout victory. Montiel, considered a crown jewel of Mexico boxing, captured his first world title in December 2000, knocking out defending WBO flyweight champion Isidro Garcia in the seventh round. He held the title through 2001, successfully defending it three times, before vacating it to dethrone undefeated WBO junior bantamweight champion Pedro Alcazar, whom Montiel knocked out in the sixth round of their June 2002 fight to claim his second world title in as many divisions. After losing the title to Mark Johnson via a majority decision one year later, Montiel reclaimed it in April 2005, stopping Ivan Hernandez in the seventh round. Montiel successfully defended that title seven times during his three-year reign before vacating it to claim the WBO interim bantamweight title.
Morel (41-2, 21 KOs), from San Juan, Puerto Rico, is the second half of this classic Mexico-Puerto Rico battle. With 50 knockout victories between Morel and Montiel, this has all the makings of a Pier Six Brawl!!! Morel captured the WBA flyweight title in 2000, winning a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision over undefeated defending champion Sornpichai Pisnurachank. He held the title for three years, successfully defending it five times against world-class competition with a combined record of 90-12-7 when he fought them, before losing it in a hotly contested defense to undefeated contender Lorenzo Parra in December 2003, a consequence of staying at flyweight too long. Since then, Morel has won eight of his last nine fights while collecting North American Boxing Organization (NABO) junior bantamweight and bantamweight titles. World-rated No. 1 by the WBO, Morel is ready to let his “Little Hands of Steel” fly when he faces Montiel on June 27.
Brooklyn’s own Malignaggi (26-2, 5 KOs), returns to the shores of Atlantic City for the first time since June 2008 where he successfully defended his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior welterweight title for the first time, winning a unanimous decision over top-rated contender Herman Ngoudjo. Malignaggi, long a Big Apple favorite, captured the world title by dethroning defending IBF champion Lovemore N’dou with one of his best performances, producing a 12-round unanimous decision on scores of 120-106, 120-106 and 118-108. He successfully defended his title twice during his 17-month long reign, including a rematch with N’dou, before vacating it to face Ricky Hatton last November. The only blemishes on his resume have been world title losses to Hatton and Miguel Cotto. He returns to the ring fresh from an April 25 unanimous decision victory over Christopher Fernandez.
Alvarado (26-0, 18 KOs), from the mile-high city of Denver, CO., will be looking to make the most of his East Coast debut. Having knocked out eight of his last 10 opponents, the self-described boxer-puncher has finally broken into the Top-10, world-rated No. 8 by the IBF, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 10 by the WBA, based on his impressive victories over rugged opponents, including knockouts of former world champion Cesar Bazan and world-class contenders Michael Clark and Emmanuel Clottey. Malinaggi is by far the biggest test of Alvarado’s five-year professional career and a true barometer of where he stands in the junior welterweight division. He returns to ring after two impressive 2009 performances – a 10th-round knockout of Clottey on March 7, where he was leading on all three judges’ scorecards 90-80, and an eight-round unanimous decision over Jauquin Gallardo on May 2, again pitching a no-hitter with the judges scoring it 80-71, 80-71, and 79-72. In preparation for their fights against Gallardo and Hatton, Alvarado spent time at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club sparring with Manny Pacquiao.
Martirosyan (23-0, 14 KOs), a native of Armenia now living in Glendale, Calif., returns to the ring reunited with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach and his assistant trainer former light heavyweight and heavyweight world champion Michael Moorer. Known as “The Nightmare,” the 2004 U.S. Olympian, whose amateur resume boasts victories over world champions Andre Berto and Timothy Bradley, is on the verge of breaking through professionally in the competitive junior middleweight division, where he is currently word-rated No. 12 by the IBF and No. 19 by the World Boxing Council (WBC).
Tsurkan (26-4, 17 KOs), a Ukrainian native now living in Bronx, NY, enters this fight having won seven of his last nine bouts, including NABF super welterweight championship knockout victories over Hector Camacho, Jr. and Sammy Sparkman. In his last bout, the rugged Tsurkan became the only fighter to extend undefeated No. 1 contender Alfredo Angulo beyond the sixth round, making it into the 10th stanza, which was broadcast by HBO.

King Arthur´s June 27 fight against Mahir Oral will be broadcast by U.S. premium television network SHOWTIME. "That is a big honour for Arthur," Kalle Sauerland said. "It does not happen very often that fights from Germany are on U.S. television. It tells you something about Arthur´s class. This is only the third time in more than 20 years that SHOWTIME Sports has televised world championship boxing from Germany, and it is the very first non-heavyweight bout. Abraham, the undefeated IBF Middleweight Champion (29-0, 23 KOs), is currently shaping up on Usedom, a small island in the Baltic Sea. He was thrilled to hear the news. "I am excited that the fans in the US will be able to watch my fight," he said. "For me personally it is a confirmation that my way of fighting and my style are well-received by the U.S. fans. That means a lot to me.."
King Arthur celebrated a successful U.S. debut last June when he clinched a spectacular fourth-round KO victory over long-time foe Edison Miranda on SHOWTIME. Ever since then, promoters and managers have been working to set up a fight against super-champion Kelly Pavlik. But Abraham is taking one step at a time. "All my focus is on Mahir Oral now," he said. "I hope to fight in the U.S. again soon. It is my goal to please my fans on both sides of the ocean."
ARTHUR ABRAHAM’S UNDEFEATED RECORD AND IBF MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE ON THE LINE AGAINST MAHIR ORAL
Saturday, June 27, 2009, 9 p.m. ET/PT (tape delay)
Special Saturday Primetime Edition of ShoBox: The New Generation From Berlin, Germany
NEW YORK (June 17, 2009) — International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion “King’’ Arthur Abraham puts his undefeated record and middleweight title on the line against world-ranked Mahir (pronounced Meyer) “Lion” Oral in a special Saturday primetime edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, on June 27, 2009, on SHOWTIME® at 9 p.m. ET/PT (same day, tape delay).
The site of the scheduled 12-round world championship fight is Abraham’s hometown of Berlin, Germany, and will take place at the Max-Schmeling Halle.
In his only fight in the United States, just over a year ago, Abraham made his debut on SHOWTIME with a fourth-round TKO over Edison Miranda in Hollywood, Fla. It was a rematch of their previous bout on Sept. 23, 2006, in Wetzlar, Germany, in which Abraham won a controversial 12-round unanimous decision to give Miranda his first loss in 26 fights. It was Abraham’s third IBF title defense.
Abraham, 29, enters the June 27 fight—his ninth IBF title defense—with a 29-0 record (23 KOs) while Oral is 25-1-2 (10 KOs). Sauerland Events will promote the fight.
In his last start on March 14, the aggressive-minded, hard-hitting Abraham successfully defended his crown with a 12-round decision against Lajuan Simon in Kiel, Germany.
A former sparring partner of the defending champion, Oral is a German boxer of Turkish descent who has won his last 18 fights. The 6-foot-1, 29-year-old fights out of Hamburg, Germany, and, like Abraham, has fought the majority of his fights in Germany.
Unbeaten since March 2004, he is a skilled, well-conditioned, quick-handed boxer with nice moves who throws a variety of combinations. In his last outing, he recorded an eighth-round TKO over Alexander Sipos on Nov. 18, 2008, in Cuxhaven, Germany.
Said Oral’s manager Ahmet Öner: “Many others in the middleweight division are avoiding Arthur because they don’t think they have any chance against him, but I told Mahir that he has nothing to lose. Should he actually be beaten, then it will be against the strongest ever world champion in his weight division. And that is Arthur Abraham. So we have nothing to lose.
Oral has captured several minor belts, but this is his first opportunity at a world title. He has campaigned at or around 160 pounds since turning pro on March 4, 2000. His only losses came between March 2003 and March 2004 when he followed back-to-back draws with the only defeat in his career.

On Saturday, June 27th, Golden Boy Promotions returns to Los Angeles' STAPLES Center with two World Championship bouts that will kick off the summer fight season in explosive fashion. In the main event, Oxnard's "Vicious" Victor Ortiz faces Marcos Maidana for the interim WBA World Super Lightweight Title and in the co-feature, Chris John and Rocky Juarez meet in an explosive rematch for the WBA World Featherweight Championship after their first bout on February 28th was scored a draw and left fans wanting more.
"The fight fans of Southern California are some of the best in the world and when we put a show on in LA, it's got to be top-notch," said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.. "With this in mind, we made sure that we delivered top notch match-ups at STAPLES Center by presenting two world title fights that are bound to be exciting. Victor Ortiz is one of the top young fighters in the world and this is his chance to take the next step in his career with his first world title shot against a tough opponent in Marcos Maidana. As for Chris John and Rocky Juarez, their first fight was one of the best of the year so far and I have no doubt that they're going to do it again in their rematch."
"This is a real treat for Boxing After Dark fans as they get to see a full range of world class boxers competing in one of the country's highest profile venues," said Luis Barragan, director of programming HBO Sports.
"STAPLES Center and AEG are incredibly excited about hosting an amazing night of boxing on June 27th in downtown Los Angeles," Lee Zeidman, STAPLES Center General Manager. "This will undoubtedly be night that boxing fans won't want to miss!"
The championship doubleheader is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and Southwest Airlines. Ortiz vs. Maidana is presented in association with Universum Media Network and John vs. Juarez II in association with Sampson Boxing. The bouts will air live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:00pm ET/PT. Doors open at 3:30pm, and the first bell sounds at 4:00pm.

A charismatic southpaw whose last nine wins have ended by knockout, Oxnard, California's "Vicious" Victor Ortiz (24-1-1, 19 KO's) is seen by most boxing fans and insiders as having the potential to be the fight game's next superstar. Just 22 years old, Ortiz, who owns knockout wins over Carlos Maussa and Emmanuel Clottey, most recently dazzled the boxing world by halting Jeffrey Resto and Mike Arnaoutis in two rounds each in his last two outings. Now he gets his first world title opportunity on June 27th.
"This is the moment all fighters dream of and I'm going to make the most of it," said Ortiz. "Maidana's got a good record and a lot of knockouts, but I'm not going to let him come into my backyard and beat me. That's just not happening."
Santa Fe, Argentina's Marcos "El Chino" Maidana (25-1, 24 KO's) is a former national amateur champion who just missed making the 2004 Argentine Olympic Team. But Maidana is searching for gold of a different sort in the pro game and so far, few have been able to deal with his prodigious punching power. Owner of 24 knockout wins in 26 fights, Maidana has taken out ten foes in the first round, with 21 opponents unable to make it past round three. Needless to say, Ortiz vs. Maidana has the potential to be an all-out war.
"Ortiz is a good fighter, but he's never tasted power like mine," said Maidana. "Once I hit him, he won't want to fight with me. That's when I'll move in, take him out and take the belt back home to Argentina."
In February, longtime WBA World Featherweight Champion Chris John (42-0-2, 22 KO's) made his long-awaited United States debut against Rocky Juarez and fight fans here finally got to see what the rest of the world has been raving about for years. A native of Indonesia, the dynamic John has held the 126-pound title since 2003, defending the title successfully 11 times against the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Hiroyuki Enoki and Derrick "Smoke" Gainer. On June 27th, he looks to take out Juarez in his second Stateside appearance.
"I was happy with the reception I received by the United States fans in my first fight here and I'm excited to be back," said John. "The first fight was in Rocky's hometown, but this time, we'll be fighting in Los Angeles where tens of thousands of Indonesians live. STAPLES Center will be my back yard. Rocky Juarez and I had a great fight the first time and I know I will give the fight fans a great performance again on June 27th."
2000 United States Olympic Silver medalist Rocky Juarez (28-4-1, 20 KO's) has weathered the ups and downs of his pro career and when he battled through 12 hard rounds with John in February, he believed he had finally achieved his dream of winning a world title. Though the draw verdict wasn't what he expected, it did ensure that he would get another shot at the belt and with confidence and determination, the 29-year-old from Houston, Texas plans on grabbing the gold this summer.
"I thought I won the first fight with John, but I can't dwell on the past," said Juarez. "I know what it takes to beat him and even though he's a great fighter who I respect a lot, I won't be denied the second time we fight. I'm bringing the world title home with me to Houston this time."
An action-packed slate of undercard bouts will be announced at a later date. For more information on the June 27th event, please visit www.goldenboypromotions.com.

News:
Perhaps it is something to do with the weather, which obstinately appears set to remain fair for the moment, but the shock factor at the 123rd Championships has hardly registered on the Richter scale so far.
Here we are, about to embark on the second round of the singles, with the fields already cut by half to 64, and hardly a seed of any repute has been ground underfoot.
In Wednesday's programme, the lower half of the draw, just two men whose seeding merits bold type in this very programme's pages of detailed scores have been required to pack their bags: James Blake the US Davis Cup star and the 17th seed, and Feliciano Lopez, the Spanish left-hander, who will be teaming up on a social basis with his good pal Rafael Nadal a bit earlier than he had thought.
For the rest, the seeds march on. Roger Federer, who gave his game a workout and his new wardrobe an airing on Monday, hopes a repeat on both fronts will prove adequate as he takes on another Spanish Lopez, this one by the name of Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, or Willi to his mates.
Willi won his first tour title on the clay of Kitzbuhel last month, in his seventh year as a pro and showed he is no slouch on grass either by going past a couple of rounds at Queen's Club a couple of weeks ago before colliding with Andy Murray.
All very commendable, to be sure, but he is now required to stare down the gun barrel of a five-time Wimbledon champion hell bent on boosting that total to six.
The last two times that has happened Willi did not come out of it too impressively, being granted just two games by Federer in their first match (Basle 2006) and five in the second (Indian Wells 2008).
But this 26-year-old from La Roda Alacete stands at 42 in the world rankings, and will therefore not be taken lightly, even by Federer. But it would still be a big shock if there was an upset.
Those who will fancy their chances of an upset remain a little further down the road at the moment, and have survival concerns of their own before they can start thinking about toppling the Grand Slam king.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the ninth seed, was stretched by Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan, in his first match and will be hoping for a less stressful time against Simone Bolelli, one of a small group of Italians who are working hard at restoring that nation's tennis fortunes to something approaching respectability.
Those fortunes should not prove enough of a hurdle to keep Tsonga away from a place in the last 32, and it is Andreas Seppi, the top-ranked Italian, who appears set on an easier path into the third round.
Having been the one who brought down Blake, he now tackles Marc Gicquel of France with every prospect of further progress.
Anyone who doubts that tennis players are growing taller, apparently by the minute, should take in this afternoon's Centre Court clash between Sam Querrey and Marin Cilic immediately following Federer's match.
Querrey, a 6ft 6in Californian, will at least be able to look Croatia's Marin Cilic in the eye since they are the same height, though he may have to bow the knee in this one to a 20-year-old who is top seed in his homeland and is bidding to dwell in the same rarified air as his compatriots, Goran Ivanisevic and Mario Ancic.
Nobody, but nobody, looks that other Croatian, Ivo Karlovic, in the eye. Not unless they bring along a step ladder when being introduced to this 6ft 10in fellow.
Karlovic, who hits aces the way the rest of us swat flies, will doubtless bang down a bagful more against Belgian Steve Darcis, who might consider renting body armour for their match on Court 4.
Germany appears to be enjoying a post-Boris Becker revival, with four men from that country in action today, though it could be curtains for the lowest-ranked of them, Simon Greul, a qualifier, who has to match himself against the fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic in the opener on No. 1 Court. A happier outcome should surely await Tommy Haas, also on No.1 Court. The 24th seed, who learned his tennis skills at the Bollettieri academy in Florida, should see off Michael Llodra, thus helping to reduce the army of French hopes to more manageable proportions.
It is shriek time on Centre Court, where Maria Sharapova, a high decibel operator who had a lot of other folk shouting out loud when she won here in 2004 at the age of 17, takes on Gisela Dulko, Argentina's numero uno and lone hope in the women's event.
Sharapova, coming back warily after 10 months out because of an operation on her serving shoulder, says she has no expectations of doing particularly well this fortnight but today, surely, should have enough about her to do away with Dulko.
Serena Williams, who will tell anybody prepared to listen that she fancies her chances of a third Wimbledon title (and that if she doesn't manage it, sister Venus will) takes her thunderball style out to No.1 Court, with the opposition being provided by an Austrian, Jarmila Groth. At least, Serena will be pleased to note, she is not playing an "ova", of whom she says, she is fast losing track in the women's game. Join the club, Serena.

News:
Wladimir Klitschko beat Ruslan Chagaev in a dominant performance on Saturday before an estimated 60,000 fans at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Klitschko defended his IBF and WBO heavyweight belts and is now the new Ring Magazine heavyweight champion. Klitschko dropped Chagaev in the second round and did plenty of damage to Chagaev's face throughout the later rounds. Referee Eddie Cotton called the fight after the ninth round after Chagaev was unable to continue due to a cut.
Andy Lee, Irish Middleweight prospect chalked up another decisive win on undercard of the Waldimir Klitschko V Ruslan Chagaev, World Heavyweight Clash tonight (June 20) in the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Lee shared the ring with the durable and strong Olegs Fedotovs from Lativia, who carried a record of 10 W(6KO) 5L(1KO) before the fight..
Lee took charge of the fight from the opening bell off- loading sharp crisp punches and troubled the Lativian with heavy blow in the first round. Fedotovs tactics were to draw the Kronk boxer into a brawl, often swinging wild hay-maker punches.
Lee remained composed and measured throughout the fight using his long effective right lead to tame and keep his opponent at bay. Lee demonstrated his boxing skills and maturity to comfortably coast each round to a points victory. The Kronk star unleashed a stinging left hand to floor Fedotovs in the last round.
The Irish soutpaw commented after the fight ' I'm really delighted to win tonight, this was my 19th fight in my career and I see the victory as another building block in moving forward in my career and obtaining experience. It was a real honour to be on the undercard of a World Heavyweight Title fight in a sold out 60,000 capacity venue here in Germany.'
This was Lee's 2nd outing this year and he is very keen to get back into the ring over the summer months to further his goal of making his mark in the sport. ' I hope to get a fight in July or August in the States and keep myself busy, but tonight I am going to relish and enjoy the win and feeling of success.

News:
Ruslan Chagaev is the new opponent of IBF, WBO and IBO World Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko on June 20 in the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. WBA Champion Chagaev was engaged after original fighter David Haye had pulled out due to an injury on Wednesday. The winner of the bout will receive the vacant Ring Magazine Heavyweight Championship Belt which was held by Vitali Klitschko until he retired in 2005.
„It is sad that David cannot compete. However, I am looking into the future and forward to fighting against Ruslan. He is WBA Champion, very experienced and a tough challenger. For my preparation, I have to change my sparring partner from orthodox to southpaw”, says Wladimir Klitschko..
30-year-old Chagaev captured the WBA crown from Russian Nikolay Valuev in 2007 and defended his title twice afterwards. Before, he had won the WBA elimination bout against former WBA Champion John Ruiz. Chagaev is unbeaten and has a record of 25 wins (17 by KO) and one draw.
„Last week my fight against Valuev was cancelled. Now I am fighting against Wladimir Klitschko in front of 60.000 spectators. I am looking forward to the arena in Schalke, the crowd as well as Klitschko’s three belts which I will take home with me”, says Ruslan´Chagaev.
After Haye’s pull-out, the Klitschko Management Group (KMG) has been working hard to find an equivalent opponent. “We always wanted to stick to June 20 as we do not want to disappoint the Schalke fans. Ruslan Chagaev is reigning WBA Champion and a high-class boxer. The fight night in Schalke will take place as planned and I am sure we all will have an unforgettable evening”, says Bernd Bönte, Managing Director of KMG.
Chagaev promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl (Universum): „This is a huge chance for Ruslan. Negotiations with the Klitschko Management have been very professional and quick. The planned event is simply gigantic and will find its place in the history of boxing.”
All purchased tickets for the fight night on June 20 will still be valid.

Adrian Diaconu - Jean Pascal, watch the full video
Here is the link for the full video in better quality: Adrian Diaconu - Jean Pascal
News:
This coming June 19th in Canada, unbeaten WBC interim light-heavyweight champion Adrian Diaconu meets fellow local man and former WBC super-middleweight title challenger Jean Pascal in a fight that will decide the WBC 175-pound crown for real. A top quality match-up that on paper should give us a great fight, the June clash is also a tough one to pick a winner from.
Romania's Diaconu, a decorated amateur who represented his country as a middleweight in the 2000 Olympic games (he failed to capture a medal), is a dangerous and determined fighter to be sure.. After seeing a potential fight with Chad Dawson - who then held the WBC 175-pound crown - go out of the window due to "Bad" Chad choosing to vacate and fight Antonio Tarver instead, Diaconu was more than ready for his April 2008 fight against Chris Henry. Capturing the WBC interim strap, "The Shark" won a unanimous decision. Now the 30-year-old with the 26-0(15) record aims to win the belt outright against Pascal.
26-year-old Pascal - also a fine amateur, who won gold at the 2002 Commonwealth games - is well known to a number of fans thanks to his superb, albeit losing showing against Carl Froch, in what was a superb fight last December. Taking turns trying to knock chunks out of one another, Pascal and Froch gave fans a fight of the year candidate. Now, against Diaconu, Pascal, 22-1(15) moves up in weight and attempts to become a world champion again.
Both men boxed tune-ups on April 4th in Canada, and both men won with no real trouble - Diaconu on points over 8 rounds, Pascal by 5th round stoppage. However, for Diaconu the UD win was his first action in almost a year, or since the win over Henry, and against David Whittom at 186-pounds the 30-year-old did not look all that special. Pascal, against Pablo Nievas, looked far better; but make of that what you will. Rest assured both guys will be ready to rumble on June 19th.
Diaconu is the natural light-heavyweight, having boxed almost all his pro career there; while Pascal has the experience of going through the hell that he and Froch went through in their war. We now know how tough and full of heart the Haitian-born fighter is. By comparison, and putting all his obvious talent aside, we don't know yet if Diaconu is capable of fighting that hard for that long. Also, though he is the proven light-heavyweight, "The Shark" is the slightly shorter man at 5'9" to Pascal's 5'11."
Both men are pretty much at their peak it's safe to assume, and we could well have another war on our hands next month. How much did the Froch battle take out of Pascal? Is Diaconu going to be affected by the year's inactivity he had? Will this be a fight that ages both men?
It's questions like these that will ensure a big, probably sell-out, crowd next month. For what it's worth, my pick is Pascal on points in a very close one.

Miguel Cotto - Joshua Clottey, watch the full video

News:
Last night, at Madison Square Garden, New York, Miguel Cotto passed his first acid test since losing to Antonio Margarito, as he sucked it up and came through to win on points against the dangerous Joshua Clottey. Prevailing by a split verdict, the 28-year-old from Puerto Rico got the win by scores of 116-111 and 115-112. 32-year-old Clottey from New York by way of Ghana, was deemed the winner by a margin of 114-113 on the third card. "Junito" is now 34-1(27). "The Grand Master" is now 35-3(20).
The fight, for the first eight-rounds at least, was crammed full of drama. With pound-for-pound king and possible future opponent for the winner Manny Pacquiao sitting ringside, Cotto and Clottey gave their all in an excellent fight that fell short of being a real classic due to the way the last four-rounds saw the pace slow somewhat.. Still, this is maybe nitpicking; for the fight was indeed a good one to watch.
One thing that was instantly noticeable was just how massive Clottey looked. The older man's broad back and shoulders gave the impression that the WBO title challenger was at least ten or maybe fifteen pounds above the 147 limit. Cotto was strong himself though, and a battle of attrition was soon on. However, on two or three occasions it looked as though the fight might not last too long at all.
After a fairly cagey opener, which saw both men feel one another out, Cotto suddenly got inside Clottey's guard with a sharp and short left hand to the chin. Clottey never saw the shot, and down he went. Up quickly and not too badly hurt, Clottey heard the bell go a second later. Still, it was a shock to see the reliably-chinned challenger on the mat.
More drama came in the 3rd round, as Cotto was cut by a head-clash that was deemed accidental by referee Arthur Mercante Junior. Turning away after the two had banged heads, Cotto was cut badly; the blood pouring out of the gash above his left eye. It looked like a fight-ending injury, but thankfully the bout continued (thanks in large part to Miguel's cutman).
In the 4th, Clottey really went for it, sensing his big chance. But Cotto, showing real heart and refusing to panic because of the blood that was clearly bothering his vision, came roaring back. It was a great round of two-way action!
In the 5th, Clottey began to unleash his right hand - a weapon he had saved until this point in the fight. Catching Cotto to the head a number of times, the 32-year-old looked more dangerous than before. Then, in a corner, Clottey went down hard on his face. From the replay it is tough to tell, but either Clottey slipped or he was helped along by Cotto. In real pain and down for some time, Clottey eventually got up and signalled how his right knee was bothering him. Given time to walk it off, Clottey ignored the pain and went back to work.
Already, the fans had had enough drama for their money.
By the 6th round, a war was shaping up. Stuck on the ropes for long periods of the round, Clottey was under real fire, but he also threw shots back as he felt the ropes on his broad shoulders. "The Grand Master" was definitely hurt at least a couple of times in this round.
Clottey came back well in the 7th and 8th rounds, arguably having his best period of the fight. In the 7th, a right uppercut to the chin landed for Clottey, and two more right hands to the head also scored as Cotto used plenty of movement. The 8th saw Cotto's chin really tested, as a huge right hand crashed into his head. It was noticeable how Clottey was slipping a little on the canvas - was it simply water, or was the challenger's knee still bothering him? Cotto again pinned Clottey on the ropes in the 8th, but for some reason let his man off. Was Miguel tiring?
The last third of the fight was quieter and Cotto seemed content to cruise to the final bell. Feeling he was up on points, the champion back-pedalled, fired out flurries, occasionally switched to southpaw and boxed smartly. Clottey, who continued to come forward, simply did not let his hands go enough. The rounds were still close, however, and the final result was in doubt all the way.
Two more brief moments of controversy came in the 12th and last round, as first Clottey was hit on the back of the head as he spun around, and then as the challenger complained about being hit low. Was Clottey trying to get a point taken off Cotto? Maybe, but Mercante Junior wasn't going for it.
At the bell Clottey raised his hands instantly, believing he’d done enough to win. Cotto gave his rival much respect and the two embraced.
Afterwards, Clottey said he wanted a rematch, and he claimed he’d won the fight. Cotto could celebrate, though, having come though his toughest battle since the loss to Margarito. Have all demons from that loss been exorcised once and for all? It looks like it.
A gruelling and at times punishing fight, it remains to be seen if either Cotto or Clottey will want to fight again this year. October - the date Manny Pacquiao fights again - certainly looks too soon for last night’s winner to get back in the ring. But we will see.

Not long to go now until welterweight talents Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey climb into the ring at Madison Square Garden, New York in their WBO title showdown. For Cotto, the fight will be his first real test since sensationally being stopped by the subsequently disgraced Antonio Margarito, and for Clottey tomorrow night's fight represents the big opportunity he has been craving since losing a decision to common opponent Margarito.
Was Cotto damaged long term by the hammering he took late in his July 2008 loss to the Mexican? Is Clottey clever enough to be able to defeat the Puerto Rican star? Accra-born Clottey is certainly tough enough to have a very good chance of winning, and the man who gave up the IBF 147-pound belt he won by stopping Zab Judah (another common opponent of the two) so as to get Cotto in the ring is convinced he is faster than Cotto also...
Speaking to Spencer Fearon of Setanta.com recently, Clottey said he feels his body attack will be something Cotto will not like - claiming that the 30-year-old has shown his displeasure at being hit in the midsection before.
Clottey even went as far as to say Cotto is just a "normal" fighter.
"He's a normal guy," Clottey said of his upcoming foe. "He's not speedy, he's not fast, he's just a normal one-punch fighter. He's not a combination puncher. I have never thought he was better than me. I know he's not faster than me, I'm faster than him and he doesn't like body shots.
"I have no special game-plan. All I'm thinking is getting there and winning the fight. You need to get to the ring relaxed. I pray that when I get to the ring I will feel as I do in the gym, then I will be fine."
Clottey is certainly one of the physically strongest, if not the strongest, welterweights Cotto could have wound up fighting. Known to enter the ring as high as 156-pounds or so on fight night, "The Grand Master" will likely do so again tomorrow night. But then, Cotto is huge for welterweight also. This fight really could end up being a really hard and gruelling battle for both men - and it's also possible that neither guy will feel like fighting again this year after such a draining effort.
A stoppage looks unlikely either way, if you ask me. But a hugely entertaining war that elevates both men is what we will get over the full 12 rounds.
The winner will almost certainly be looked at as a near future opponent for superstar Manny Pacquiao (who will be ringside) - but what will Cotto and Clottey leave behind in the ring on June 13th, and how much will either man have left afterwards?
This one will be rough!

News:
NEW YORK (April 15, 2009) – Photo: Chris Farina - Top Rank -- New York’s most popular fighter, three-time world champion MIGUEL COTTO, returns to the Big Apple, risking his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, to take on International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion JOSHUA CLOTTEY in a rumble to determine the true world welterweight champion, Promoted by Top Rank, the Cotto vs. Clottey World Welterweight Championship will take place Saturday, June 13 at Madison Square Garden. The fight will be broadcast live on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 10:35 p.m. ET/ 7:35 p.m. PT. This marks the fourth time in the past five years Cotto will headline a show at The Garden on the eve of New York’s National Puerto Rican Day Parade. Tickets to Cotto vs. Clottey, priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50, can be purchased at the Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets or online at www.thegarden.com ..
“Clottey is a defensive boxer and a tough fighter,” said Cotto. “His record proves he belongs at the elite level of the welterweight division. But I will be ready to give everything I have against him and to do all that is necessary to defeat him. On June 13th, the world will witness a great fight between Clottey and me. It’s going to be a war inside the ring at The Garden.”
“I have always wanted to fight Miguel Cotto. It’s been a goal of mine for a long, long time. I can’t believe the opportunity is finally here,” said Clottey. “A victory over Cotto will give me the break in boxing I have been searching for. My time has finally arrived.”
“This is the fight that fight fans have been waiting for,” said Bob Arum, Chairman of Top Rank. “Two great champions – Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey – will face off in the ring at historic Madison Square Garden. What a night this will be.”
Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, will be headlining his sixth event at the “Mecca of Boxing” since his Garden debut in 2005. No boxer in this millennium has sold more tickets in this hallowed venue. His 2007 world title victory over Zab Judah in front of a capacity crowd of 20,658 produced The Garden’s first boxing sellout since the 2001 Felix Trinidad-Bernard Hopkins world middleweight championship fight. A three-time world champion in two different divisions, Cotto captured the vacant WBO welterweight title in his last fight, February 21 at The Garden, stopping top-rated contender Michael Jennings in the fifth round. He began his world championship run in September 2004, knocking out undefeated contender Kelson Pinto to win the vacant WBO junior welterweight title. He successfully defended that belt six times during his two-year reign before vacating it to challenge Carlos Quintana. Cotto stopped him in the fifth round in December 2006 to capture the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight crown. Cotto successfully defended that title four times, going the distance only once, before losing it to Antonio Margarito on July 26 via an 11th-round TKO.
Clottey (35-2, 21 KOs), a native of Accra, Ghana, now living in the Bronx, NY, returns to the ring from his biggest career victory, a 10-round technical decision over former three-time world champion Zab Judah on August 2. Leading on all scorecards when the fight was stopped, Clottey had battered and bloodied Judah who had no answer for the onslaught. Known for his aggressive style and good punching power, Clottey enters this fight riding a two-year, five-bout winning streak which includes victories over Judah, former two-division world champion Diego Corrales, undefeated contender Shamone Alvarez and two-time world title challenger Felix Flores. The only blemish since 2001, a 12-round decision loss to WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito, a fight Clottey was winning until he broke his right hand in the fourth round.

ORANGE, June 8 – It’s a championship doubleheader for fight fans this Friday, June 12th, when unbeaten young guns Juan Carlos Burgos and Mauricio Herrera look to make the leap from prospects to contenders on Thompson Boxing Promotions’ highly-anticipated “New Blood IV” card at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California.
In the main event, Burgos looks for his 22nd win without a loss when he battles fellow featherweight standout Vyacheslav Gusev for the WBC CABOFE title, and in the co-feature, Riverside’s own “El Maestro”, Mauricio Herrera, puts his perfect record on the line against Luis Alfredo Lugo for the WBC / USNBC Jr. welterweight belt.

Vineyard Avenue. For tickets, priced at $75, $45, and $30, please call 714-935-0900.
The nephew of former world champion Victor Burgos, Juan Carlos Burgos (21-0, 15 KOs) has been carving out his own niche in the competitive pro boxing world. Just 21 years old, the Tijuana native has already compiled 21 wins without a loss, and with each fight, he is seemingly getting better and better. Fresh from a second round TKO of Omar Lizarraga in February, Burgos is ready for his biggest challenge yet in Vyacheslav Gusev (16-1, 3 KOs). Hailing from Prokopyevsk, Russia, the 23-year old has already earned the Russian, WBA Intercontinental, and WBO Intercontinental titles while showing his maturity by going the 12 round distance twice. On June 12th, he hopes to add another title belt to his trophy case by beating Burgos.
Riverside’s own Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (10-0, 5 KOs) returns to his home away from home at the Doubletree (where he is 6-0) to take on Los Mochis, Mexico’s Luis Alfredo Lugo (10-8-1, 6 KOs) in a ten round bout for the WBC / USNBC Jr. welterweight crown. Also featured on the June 12th bill will be a six round featherweight showdown between Vista’s Aaron Garcia (9-1, 2 KOs) and Huntington Park’s unbeaten Jesus “Pollo” Hernandez (8-0, 2 KOs). Garcia, a former amateur star who won the 2003 US title and two National Golden Gloves championships, is returning to the ring for the first time since his win over Gabe Garcia last September. The 20-year old Hernandez, a native of Los Mochis, Mexico, has been on a tear that he hopes to continue against Garcia.
In undercard action, Alberto Herrera (1-0, 1 KO) and Alfredo Rivera (0-4) meet in a four round junior middleweight clash, welterweights Ignacio “Quiquiriqui” Garcia (2-1-1) of Pomona and Yakub Shideav (1-1, 1 KO) of Kyrgyzstan collide, and in the four round lightweight opener, Indio’s Miguel Uronia takes on Pacoima’s Oscar Chinchilla in a battle of pro debutants.
Doors open at 6:30pm, and the first bell is at 7:45pm. All bouts subject to change.
